What is a SIP Calculator?

A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) calculator is an online tool that estimates the future value of your monthly mutual fund investments. It uses the Future Value of Annuity formula to project how your regular investments will grow over time with compound interest.

For Indian investors, a good SIP calculator should also handle: Indian numbering (lakh/crore), step-up SIP (annual increase), inflation adjustment, and LTCG tax estimation.

The SIP Formula Explained

The standard SIP calculation uses the Future Value of Annuity formula:

FV = P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) / i × (1 + i)

Where:

Example: ₹10,000/month for 10 years at 12% annual return:
i = 12/1200 = 0.01, n = 120 months
FV = 10,000 × ((1.01^120 − 1)/0.01) × 1.01 = ₹23,23,391

What is Step-Up SIP?

A step-up SIP allows you to increase your monthly investment by a fixed percentage each year. This aligns with annual salary increments and can significantly boost your final corpus.

Example: Starting at ₹10,000/month with a 10% annual step-up for 20 years at 12%:
Standard SIP final value: ~₹1 crore
With 10% step-up: ~₹2.3 crores (more than double!)

Why Adjust for Inflation?

₹1 Crore sounds impressive, but after 20 years of 6% inflation, its purchasing power is only about ₹31 lakhs in today's money. Always check the inflation-adjusted (real) value of your target corpus.

Our Goal Planner helps you set inflation-adjusted targets so you save for what you'll actually need.

LTCG Tax on SIP Returns

For equity mutual funds held over 1 year:

Example: If your total gain is ₹5 lakhs: taxable gain = ₹3,75,000, tax payable = ₹46,875.

Common SIP Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Using unrealistic return expectations — 25-30% is not sustainable. Plan with 10-12%.
  2. Ignoring inflation — Always check the real (inflation-adjusted) value.
  3. Not accounting for expense ratios — A 1-2% expense ratio can reduce your corpus by ₹10-20 lakhs over 20 years.
  4. Stopping SIP during market downturns — This is when you get the most units for your money.
  5. Not reviewing and rebalancing — Review your portfolio at least once a year.
