Frequently Asked Questions
A SWP (Systematic Withdrawal Plan) allows you to withdraw a fixed amount from your mutual fund
investments at regular intervals (typically monthly). Your remaining corpus continues to earn returns,
providing a regular income stream — ideal for retirement or supplementing monthly cash flow.
It depends on your withdrawal rate, expected returns, and initial corpus. As a rule of thumb,
keeping annual withdrawals below 6-8% of your corpus helps preserve capital. If your withdrawal
rate exceeds your returns, the corpus will gradually deplete. This calculator shows exactly
when depletion occurs.
A commonly recommended safe withdrawal rate is 4-6% annually. For example, with a ₹1 Crore corpus,
withdrawing ₹40,000-50,000/month (4.8-6% annual) is generally sustainable over long periods.
Higher withdrawal rates increase the risk of depleting your corpus prematurely.
SWP is often more tax-efficient than the dividend option. With SWP, only the capital gains portion
of each withdrawal is taxable (and after 1 year, equity funds get LTCG tax benefit with ₹1.25L exemption).
Dividends are taxed at your income tax slab rate. SWP also gives you predictable cash flow.
